President's Message: Rick Winn
March 2018 Runabouts to Rockets

Volume 37 #3

While in Minnesota for the holidays my father-in-law and I decided to drive to Shoreview to check out the facilities for the NAOC Meet. Of course at that time it was snowy and really cold, about zero. Gave me pause for those of us who live in the colder areas of the country —bomb cyclone comes to mind. Hopefully by now most of the country has thawed out enough to start thinking of warmer weather and resurrecting the Olds. The Hilton Garden Inn and the Best Western are right next to each other and are owned by the same outfit. Had a nice conversation with one of the hotel personnel who has things well in hand. They have lots of experience hosting Meets; in fact the week before us and before “Back to the Fifties” another unnamed Club is having their show there. Although I make no guarantees—I don’t work for the Men’s Wearhouse—I think the Meet is something to plan for this summer.

I spent the weekend tearing down a 1950 Olds 303 engine. Many people in this club find this activity entertaining. If you watched me sometimes, virtually everyone would be entertained. Think Tim Allen from Home Improvement. My dogs wonder about the colorful words they don’t hear often. The point has to do with the flanged front of the valley pan for which I could find no particular need. But those pesky engineers back then had to be smart enough to have a reason.

I have been fortunate enough to have acquired an Edmunds aluminum manifold but it won’t fit with that flanged front. I called Franklin Graf and Eddie Rezac to see if they had any info and they were able to get me on track. Eddie (Rezac not Edmunds) did this modification on his 1950 88 convertible 30 years ago. The bottom line is that one of the major advantages of this Club is the people that have special knowledge of almost any application you want to pursue or question you might have. Hopefully you can utilize the Advisors list to network but others in the club listed in the Directory with a car like yours can potentially help. Always remember the time differences when calling; no one really is enthusiastic about your car question at 4:00 AM or after 10:00 at night).

Stacy and I are planning, right now, to attend the Oldsmobile Homecoming in Lansing for Father’s day in June followed by a leisurely meander over to Minneapolis. Maybe we’ll ride the ferry!
