President's Message: Jim Schultz
June 2017 Runabouts to Rockets

Volume 36 #6

Our Reading meet is in the forefront of all who will attend this month. Still undecided about coming? Come anyway, the more the merrier. This will be the longest drive in my Dad’s 1957 Holiday Sedan in quite a while. I am putting on some new WW tires for the trip; the current set have been on since 1968! My Dad purchased the car from the original owner or I should say traded work on his daughter’s car for it 50 years ago. This is the car that started my ongoing Oldsmobile illness.

We are starting to drive in the higher temperatures and thoughts of vapor lock are prevalent. Last year my ’58 88 Holiday Coupe was leaving me on the side of the road when the carburetor ran out of gas in the float bowl. NAOC member Eddie Rezac (#1689) called me with a solution. He’s living in Wahoo, Nebraska and they have been burning corn gas for a while. Eddie told me putting a quart of diesel fuel—about 65 cents worth—ahead of a gas fill up will help with vapor lock. I tried it with the problematic 1958. It would stutter a little but kept going, a vast improvement! So I’m putting Eddie’s tip out to the membership to see if it helps and I would like some feedback on this. We will do an article in a later issue of Runabouts to Rockets with the testimonials good or bad about the results. Send correspondence to me and I will compile them. I also want to thank Eddie for much of the Viking material appearing in this issue.

On a sad note we lost our Bud Guyer to cancer on March 2nd. I pass on my sincere sympathies to Penny and the Guyer family. I will miss the Four Amigos judging team of Bud, Penny, Bill Ehrsam and myself. Bud was also in on choosing the Helen Earley award, served as 1939 model year advisor and model year advisor coordinator, past board member and was club historian as well. He will be missed.

I want to thank Mark and Carol Haberkorn for their generous hospitality on my trip to Florida for Oldsmar Days and to see my daughter’s family. It was a fun week and got to see many of my Florida Oldsmobile friends and my three year old grandson Cliffe, the youngest member of the Olds Club of Florida.
